Duck hunting is the sport of hunting ducks. Duck hunters normally use a 20, 12 or 10 gauge shotgun. Decoys and duck calls are commonly used. The term waterfowl is interchangeable with duck or goose. Most geese are taken over land or fields and most ducks are taken over water. Shotgun The duck gun in the United States and Canada is usually a pump action or semi-automatic shotgun, however a number of hunters choose to hunt with break action guns including side-by-side and over-under guns. In the United States, UK, Canada, and many western European countries (France in 2006) all shot used for waterfowl must be non-toxic, and therefore may not contain any lead. Steel is the cheapest alternative to...

Mistake #1 - Misjudging Distance Misjudging distance is the number one reason archers miss their mark. Archery is a precision sport, and estimating or even better yet, measuring distance is the key to success! With most major optics manufacturers producing some type of rangefinding device, calculating distances is easier than ever. Aside from cost, there is really no reason for bowhunters not to use a rangefinder these days. Some bowhunters like to mark yardages with something natural like a broken branch or a stick standing upright in the ground. Alternatively whenever possible, I use my Bushnell laser rangefinder to take a reading on nearby rocks, trees, or other structures to predetermine...

Bird flu is an infection caused by avian (bird) influenza (flu) viruses. These flu viruses occur among birds naturally. Wild birds all over the world carry the viruses in their intestines, but usually do not get sick from them. However, bird flu is extremely contagious among birds and can make some domesticated birds, including ducks, turkeys, and chickens, very sick and kill them.Bird flu viruses do not usually infect humans, but several cases of human infection with bird flu viruses have occurred since 1997.The World health Organization (WHO) issued a prophetic warning in December 2004. It claimed that if bird flu triggered the next pandemic, the virus would likely originate in Asia. This seems to...

Inuit art has been introduced to the non-Arctic world for several decades now and has enjoyed a nice climb in stature as a fine art form. Throughout the years, Inuit stone carvers have changed their artwork a bit as a result of market feedback and demand. Generally speaking, they managed to make artistic changes in response to the market without losing the northern Arctic spirit of their Inuit art form. Inuit art stone carvings have become larger and more polished compared to those early primitive looking carvings that made their debut in the commercial art market years ago.One of the later innovations in stone carvings from the Inuit art world was the dancing bear. Here is one of my favorite hunting stories. It was the Montana elk hunting season of 2002. I was hunting the high country searching for the elusive Wapiti. There was about two feet of snow & I was roughly six miles from my truck, just starting to think about lunch when I heard a branch snap down this old semi grown in clear cut. I knelt down on one knee when out of the timber came two rag horn bulls. I pulled my 7mm ultra to my shoulder took aim on the front bull then the next, when something caught my eye...

Today, hunting is still very much alive in the modern society, although it is being for various reasons. One of the top hunting targets for men is the wild boar, a known ancestor of domestic pigs although they look different. Boars are classified as feral hogs, Russian wild boar or hybrids, a mixture of the first two kinds. In the world of dog breeding, the predominant mindset is to improve the breed, or breed as close to the standard as possible. Most breeders that follow this plan will also be very careful about who they sell puppies to and what happens to those puppies in the long run. However, in the world outside the show ring or working dogs, there is a tendency to breed dogs for "educational" purposes. To teach the children about life. It does not matter who the parents of the litter are (usually), they simply want their female dog to have a litter of puppies so the kids can watch the delivery and see "mother nature" at work.Let me make this suggestion to you. Archery is both the skill and the practice of using a bow to shoot arrows and hit a target. These days, it is a renowned sport of precision and accuracy but this skill dates back to early history as a tool for hunting and a weapon in conflict. Archery was seen in the histories of the different cultures all over the continents, all except Australia. The initial evidence of archery is the "tya," which is a bow that was probably used for hunting and was later turned into a weapon for combat. These bows ultimately took over the use of the "spear-thrower" as the main tool for launching projectiles. The spear thrower launches projectiles by using leverage to gain a greater velocity. It is made of a...

How to Live Forever

Who Wants to Live Forever? As far as anybody knows, humans are the only animals that have a sense of mortality. For a very long time - presumably ever since we gained this awareness of impending death - we have speculated about the prospect of immortality. Not all cultures wish for immortality. Some religions, perhaps most religions, would regard any search for immortality as undesirable. With the greatest respect to those who do not want immortality or do not agree with it, we must surely admit that many of us - including many of religious faith - would welcome immortality, or at the very least, a prolonged life.Civilisation Produced Old AgeBefore we look at the ways in which this could be achieved...

What could be more timeless than Thanksgiving Pilgrims as a decorating motif for this uniquely American holiday? Other countries have a similar fall banquet custom but this one is filled with the history of our country's founding.Thanksgiving pilgrims are attractive on cakes, candles, table cloths, plates and napkins. Together with the cornucopia they form the most common symbols of the fall harvest. Theirs is a slim form that celebrates what has become the homage to gluttony. Statuesque forms dressed in simple 17th century garb and typically pictured with a hunting musket; they adorn tables that bear little resemblance to that austere past.It is for this reason that the Thanksgiving Pilgrims are...

Once the basic structure of your model airplane is completed, it's time to think about painting. Types of Paint Model paints are generally of two types: (oil-based) enamels, or aqueous (water-based) acrylic lacquers. The hobby enamels thin with mineral spirits, dry slowly and harden to a high-gloss finish. The hobby acrylics thin with water or alcohol, dry faster, and clean up easier. Never mix enamel with acrylic, and make sure that you use the correct type of thinner. Brush The paintbrush is the simplest method of applying paint. You'll need a broad flat brush for large area coverage, a medium diameter round brush for general use, and a fine-point brush for the smallest...

Although I had grown up with firearms, my new wife had no such interest. The thought of keeping firearms inside the house annoyed her. As the children came along I began to show an interest in teaching the kids how to shoot. My wife trusted me and went along with my plans to interest the kids in guns and hunting. I had originated from a family where guns were the norm and they were meant to be treated with respect. I kept all of the guns locked up and away from prying eyes at the house. I've been hunting in this region for approximately five years. In fact I've never hunted anywhere else. Learning as an (middle aged) adult is quite a bit harder. The urge to hunt began when we lived in eastern Montana. The whitetail deer were all over the wheat fields (I managed to take one out with our mini-van, but I don't think that counts). There were also a large amount of ring-necked pheasants. Why Hunt? Part 3

I have already gone over the primitive inspiration of hunting wild game. I also have discussed the expense and the inconvenience of being a hunter (see "Why Hunt?" and "Why Hunt? Part 2.") So, to go further into detail about this fascination, need, or what ever you call it, I would like to present some more ideas on why hunting big game, or even small game, is so important. The fact is, nature is much bigger than man, and when man is hunting he is at nature's mercy. To overcome something more powerful than you, like a bear or an elk, or track and kill a wildcat, or call ducks back that are flying away from you, is an absolute rush. The kill brings the reward, satisfaction of victory, which is due to...

First, brace your bow. To do this properly, grasp it at the handle with your right hand, the upper horn upward and the back toward you. Place the lower horn at the instep of your right foot, and the base of your left palm against the back of the bow, near the top below the loop of the string. Holding your left arm stiff and toward your left side, your right elbow fixed on your hip, pull up on the handle by twisting your body so that the bow is sprung away from you. The string is now relaxed, and the fingers of the left hand push it upward till it slips in the nock.Don't try to force the string, and don't get your fingers caught beneath it. As the week progressed we noticed that most of the sightings were in one particular area, but since only one of us would hunt there at a time, the deer would always slip through out of range. On Friday, we decided that all three of us would hunt that area, to ensure that at least one would get an opportunity to make a kill...

Involvement in certain hobbies can be due to all kinds of factors, in some cases it stems from a curiosity point of view, with others it can be because a friend insisted on showing you how, but the urge can also come from a personal need or challenge to create and make something which you know is the only way in which you will obtain that certain something. From a pure novice point of view, the learning and mastering of hobby metal casting could seem to be an impossibility, simply because of the assumption that there is an awful lot to learn about the subject, and if the truth be known, there probably is, but like many other skills you learn throughout life, the more you do, the better your skills...
